Women in the Western Isles, Skye and Lochalsh face a range of disadvantages. These include ingrained cultural stereotyping and issues relating to childcare and care of dependants. Women also face specific transportation difficulties, particularly with issues such as bus timetables. These, in many instances, are based around traditional work patterns and have the effect of excluding women from more peripheral communities from fully participating in work and community activity. These issues present particular difficulties in regard to re-training and re-entry of women to the work force.
The Local Action Group is particularly keen to see projects come forward from women which will seek to address issues relating to the following:
- Inability to access job market
- Perception of social and geographical exclusion
- Seasonal and cyclical employment, combined with low pay
- Development of family-friendly policies and programmes
